Alberta prisons being expanded

Alberta’s prisons are set to get some big upgrades.

The facilities at Drumheller and Bowden are getting $50-million to add 300 beds.

The federal government is bankrolling the expansion because new and tougher sentencing laws mean more criminals will be serving longer prison terms.

The Calgary Herald reports the new spaces should be ready by 2013.
