Top doc wants two-tier solution to reduce wait times

One of the city’s top doctors says if the rich want to cough up at least five times the cash to jump the surgery line, let them.

Dr. Lloyd Maybaum is a psychiatrist and the incoming President of the Calgary and Area Physician’s Association.

In the association’s monthly magazine, he wrote that letting the rich jump the lines would funnel cash back into the system and shorten the surgery waiting list for everyone else.

He also says the extra money would let the province hire more nurses and doctors and buy more equipment.

The Friends of Medicare tell The Calgary Herald such a proposal wouldn’t create extra capacity in the health care system, instead shifting it to those who can pay.
