Greenpeace criticizes Enbridge for second U.S. pipeline leak

Greenpeace is criticizing Enbridge after word that the Calgary-based company has had to shut down another oil pipeline in the U.S.

Enbridge closed its Line 6A that runs near Chicago, after a leak was discovered near Romeoville Thursday afternoon.

The pipeline shutdown in Illinois comes less than two months after a leak in a pipeline in Michigan caused a major spill.

In July, a rupture near Marshall, Michigan spilled more than 19,000 barrels of oil into the local river system.

Stephanie Goodwin, director of Greenpeace in British Columbia, says it speaks volumes about what she calls Enbridge’s aging pipeline network.

She tells 660News, unfortunately these incidents are not uncommon and they’re calling on the Canadian government to stop Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway Pipelines that would run near Edmonton to Kitimat, B.C.

The size of the spill in Illinois is not known at this point, but Enbridge says the line was shut down within minutes and the company says it will do everything it can to minimize the environmental impact, neighbouring landowners and communities.

The company adds, its personnel are on site and booms have been deployed as a precautionary measure.

The oil is being cleaned up with vacuum trucks.
