Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach describes his three-hour dinner meeting with the U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives in Ottawa as beneficial and productive.
Stelmach says he was happy to answer the questions poised by Nancy Pelosi and
Senator Ed Markey, the Chairman of the select committee on energy independence and global warming.
The Premier admitted oilsands development does have its fair share of challenges, but industry works to address its environmental impact on the air, land and water continues to be a top priority.
Stelmach says he was assured by Pelosi, that while the U.S. wants to reduce its dependency on foreign oil, that does not mean Canada.
Pelosi and Markey were both invited to tour the oilsands, but there’s no word when or if that will happen. At the moment, the two are focusing on mid term elections south of the border in November.
Today, Pelosi will meet with a number of other energy stakeholders and environmental groups to get their take on Oilsands development.
