Civic election likely to turn sour

It’s likely going to get dirty in the civic election.

Many candidates are kicking their campaigns into high gear with signs, brochures and phone calls, but one expert believes there will be more political attacks this time around.

Mount Royal political scientist Keith Brownsey says this could end up being the nastiest election in a long time, thanks to the number of people in the race for a chair around the council table.

“People are simply scrambling to be the top person. It also indicates that it’s a very close race and it’s very fluid. The support for some of these individuals is very strong but that can change over the next few weeks,” Brownsey tells 660News.

He says the more that candidates slip in the polls, the more negative they’ll become.

As much as voters don’t like to be bombarded with smear tactics, Brownsey says it works, and voters shouldn’t expect the strategy to go away any time soon.
