The US Ambassador to Canada says the average American likely doesn’t even know what the oilsands are.
David Jacobson spoke at a Calgary Chamber of Commerce luncheon and touted the importance of reducing the environmental impact of energy production.
He says if you asked the average person living in the United States what they though about the oilsands, they’d have no answer.
“Most people don’t really know a whole lot about it. That is both probably good and bad from the perspective of folks here in oilsands country,” said Jacobson.
“It’s good in the sense that you’re writing on more of a clean slate; bad because your message hasn’t gotten out. On the other hand, the other message hasn’t gotten out.”
Jacobson adds it’s important for his country to secure a reliable energy supply but that energy needs to be developed in an environmentally friendly manner.
“Industry leaders have to do everything they can, more than just what governments mandate, to reduce the environmental impact and the carbon footprint of the oilsands,” Jacobson said.
