A University of Calgary study suggests getting more affordable housing units built shouldn’t come down to government funding, instead, from the private sector.
And to do that, all it will take is some tax incentives.
The School of Public Policy study finds jurisdictions in the United States with tax reforms in place have affordable housing units in stock.
Ron Kneebone tells 660News the problem here can be solved by changing tax codes.
“The private sector is innovative, it’s efficient and all it really needs to make a contribution to ending homelessness and increasing the supply of affordable housing is the appropriate incentives.”
He says construction companies can build the units cheaper because they would compete for the tax incentives.
