Teams of firefighters from around the world are in Calgary preparing for the equivalent of the Olympics in rescue work.
The Calgary Fire Department is hosting the North American Vehicle Rescue Challenge.
The department’s Brian McAsey tells 660News the event takes place between Wednesday and Saturday in the parking lot of the Coast Plaza Hotel.
He says there will be over 100 vehicles staged in crashes with teams rapidly and safely removing trapped occupants under extremely challenging conditions. Participants will use specialty equipment, hand-tools and hydraulic tools to help with the rescues.
The Calgary Fire Department is fielding two teams in the competition. Other teams have come from England, Sweden and South America.
