The bed bug plague sweeping North America is so bad it was the subject of a conference in suburban Chicago this week.
Here in Calgary, we’re not immune from the spread of the pests.
Health officials are keeping close tabs on complaints about the blood sucking bedroom dwellers.
Housing inspectors in the city are reporting a steady rise in the critters, and there are reports of infestations at some hotels and care facilities in Calgary.
Lynne Navratil with Alberta Health Services tells 660News, even the arrival of colder weather won’t help much.
“Bed bugs are pretty hardy and we get bed bug complaints throughout the year.”
She says if you have been bitten or see evidence of the pesky critters, call a pest control company and check under mattresses and in all crevices for signs of the bugs.
She says a provincial bed bug committee has been set up.
“We are eagerly anticipating the results of their survey and the first step is to try to get an assessment of if the problem is growing and how severe the problem is.”
