Average Calgarian not at high risk for home invasion

Home invasion robberies are starting to become an almost daily occurrence in Calgary.

There has been a rash of robberies in the city, where people armed with weapons are bursting into homes and, after terrorizing those inside, leave with cash, drugs or other belongings.

A Calgary criminologist calls home invasions a fairly new phenomena in North America, but for the most part he says, it’s just bad guys targeting bad guys.

If you’re a law abiding citizen and you don’t have a lot of valuables around the house, your home likely won’t be targeted in an invasion-style robbery, according to Mount Royal University criminologist Doug King.

He tells 660News most home invasion robberies are gang-related.

“When gangs and wanna-be gangs start competing with one another it ultimately comes down to getting one-up in trying to get money and those kinds of things,” says King.

He says Calgary has a very good police force and suggests the ongoing crackdown on crime on the streets is what has led to more turf battles and home invasions.

He also predicts in the coming months the number of invasions will subside.
