Campaign ramps up against E-I hikes

Public campaigns are being launched to battle the planned jump in Employment Insurance premiums.

It’s all in a move to prevent the federal government from increasing the rates in January.

For 2011, it’s predicted the hike will cost employers and employees $1.6 billion.

The hikes will continue for the next four years.

There’s a lot going on to prevent the increase.   Both the Canadian Federation of Independent Business and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation are involved in the lobbying.

Kevin Gaudet with the CTF tells 660News they’ll pull out all the stops.

“We’ll try to increase awareness of the tax hike that’s looming.   We’ll be working with opposition parties and hopefully some government members to increase awareness of the need to avoid the hike,” says Gaudet.

The CFIB has started its push already with the theme called ‘Stop the Tax Grab.’

Dan Kelly with the organization tells 660News their campaign involves 10-thousand postcards, a Facebook page and Youtube videos.

“We’re putting pressure on Minister Flaherty, the Minister of Finance, to try to convince him to step in and intervene,” says Kelly.

The groups want the hike scrapped or significantly reduced.
