Troops shut out of civic election

Calgary soldiers fighting in Afghanistan won’t get to vote in our civic election.

Alberta’s Elections Act only allows people to vote in person or by mail-in ballot.

It can take five to six weeks for mail to get to the Canadian base in Kandahar, making those ballots impossible for soldiers to use since the official election campaign only lasts about a month.

The mother of a local man serving in Afghanistan tells The Calgary Sun it’s sad that her son is half a world away defending our freedom, but won’t get to exercise his own.

Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart says a change needs to be made before the next election, allowing for our soldiers to have their votes counted.
