More prisoners in Alberta jails

A new government report finds Alberta jails will get 23 per cent more prisoners in the next five years.

Tougher crime laws from Ottawa are being touted as the reason.

The number of people in custody waiting for their trials has also grown.

The Calgary Herald reports those inmates made up 58 per cent of Alberta’s prison population last year.
