Voting up at advance polling stations

It’s an early sign that voter turnout could be up in the 2010 municipal election.

On the first day of advanced polling, just over 3,000 people made their picks. That’s almost twice as many voters than during the same point of the 2007 election.

Mount Royal University political scientist Lori Williams tells 660News it appears more younger people are going to vote in this election. She doesn’t think higher voter turnout favors any particular mayoral candidate.

660News spoke to several of early-bird voters.

Reg says that after the last several months of campaigning, he doesn’t think much will change between now and October 18th, so he figured he’d beat the election day lines.

“When you look at the latest polls, you’ve got three people on top,” he says. “Why not get it over and done with early?”

Pat isn’t going to be in town on election day and she says she’s wishing for more time to make her choice.

“I would have preferred to vote on election day,” she says. “Just because there might be some issues that come up in the next few weeks.”

Other people 660News spoke with say now that their ballots are cast, they’re just happy that they can now tune out some of the constant campaign headlines.
