Three area residents in the northwest community of Highwood are being called heroes for their quick response to the cries of a baby.
On Tuesday afternoon, emergency crews were called to a dumpster outside a housing complex on 5th Street and 40th Avenue N.W.
Inside was a newborn baby. The child was just minutes or possibly hours old with its umbilical cord still attached.
After dialing 911, people in the area wrapped the child in a T-shirt and blankets while they waited for help to arrive.
Less than an hour after the little boy was rushed to hospital, a woman in her twenties was taken away by ambulance, although police have yet to link the two.
The president of the Calgary Police Association, John Dooks, tells 660News the quick response of those citizens is probably why the baby is still alive.
Dooks says he has no problem calling those people heroes.
He says police rely on the eyes and ears of everybody in the city and the earlier the intervention, the greater likelihood of a safer outcome.
Charges are pending in the case, however investigators say at this point they are more worried about the welfare of the mother and child.
