A “horrible day” for Bernard Callebaut

Bernard Callebaut is losing the company that bears his name.

A judge has rejected his bid to win back his Calgary chocolate empire from receivership.

Wednesday,  the chocolatier made a final plea to the court to reconsider his proposal, backed by local investors.

But the judge sided with receiver Deloitte & Touche’s choice of a different offer.

Callebaut tells 660News, he’s floored by the decision.

“It’s a horrible day,” he says. “27 years of history. The 25th of March, 1983 that’s when I started the business, and today that’s finished, a whole episode in my life that has stopped.”

Callebaut has said he will continue on in the city, possibly under the new company name “Creations by Bernard Callebaut.”  He plans to be once again producing fine chocolates by Christmas.
