Where is your fish from?

The chances are good your seafood was farmed.

Aquaculture is a growing industry in Canada that generates more than $2-billion dollars for the economy each year.

Industry spokeswoman Ruth Salmon tells 660News it allows us to enjoy all kinds of fish year round.

“If you’re buying mussels for example for dinner, it’s very likely those are farmed.  If they are fresh, then they either come from British Columbia or from Atlantic Canada. Sometimes it is quite obvious they are farmed and other times you will have the opportunity to choose. “

Despite our vast coast-line canada accounts for only 0.2 per cent of aquaculture, world-wide.

In Alberta we farm trout and tilapia, which are enjoyed across the country.
