The Canadian Real Estate Association has ratified a deal that could reshape the way Canadians buy and sell their homes.
The agreement, allows people to choose what services they want from their agent when selling their house, and to pay only for those services.
The deal was reached after months of negotiations between the competition bureau and the CREA that represents about 100,000 realtors.
There is some question about how much it will change the sector, and if consumers will see lower service costs.
Mike Shanks from propertyguys.com tells CTV that many traditional big-box brokerages will not offer the service. They will likely maintain the current percentage-based fee system.
Realtors currently operate on the principle that selling agents will split the standard five per cent commission with the buyer’s agent.
