Members of the Legislative Assembly receive their poppies today, as the Royal Canadian Legion distributes the first poppies of the 2010 campaign.

Poppies will be available across the city at shopping centres, businesses, legion branches and through veterans organizations.

Chairman of the Calgary Poppy Fund George Bittman says it’s important to not only honour Canada’s fallen soldiers, but also to educate young people about why we have the freedoms that we enjoy today.

All money that is donated for poppies goes to support veterans and their dependants who are in need. That help ranges from food to medical equipment.
