With the midterm elections, Americans have chosen to divide their government.
So what will this mean for Canada?
Brian Schmidt is an American political scientist teaching at Carleton University in Ottawa. He says the Republicans will likely put a halt to many major initiatives on trade and financial reform.
That could cause a lot of uncertainty for the U.S. economy and since we’re so linked financially; Canada will soon start feeling the second hand downturn.
Schmidt believes it’s unlikely our politicians can intervene to avoid this.
“When the U.S. is not able to speak with one voice, it makes it very difficult for other countries,” he says.
He adds the Harper government will likely start getting one message from President Barack Obama and a totally different one from the Republican Congress.
