U.S. political shift won’t help oilsands

The political shift in the U.S. will help the oilsands, but only in the short term.

U.S.-Canada relations expert Chris Sands tells The Calgary Herald that the gridlock in Washington will only slow the environmental concerns of Americans regarding development in northern Alberta.

He’s one of several experts who also say the political stalemate could force decisions on green issues down to the state level.

That would produce a lot of small battles for Alberta instead of one big one.

Those state by state decisions could slow down things like pipeline expansions, which will impact the delivery of oilsands crude.

Meanwhile, the midterm election results will be a hot topic at the University of Calgary Wednesday afternoon.

Senator Fred Thompson, who also used to star on the TV show “Law and Order” and Governor Howard Dean will debate if Barack Obama passed or failed his midterm test.

The event starts at about 4:30 p.m. in MacEwan Hall.
