Students in Airdrie are becoming politicial activists.
3,000 Airdrie students have signed a petition demanding the province do something about overcrowding in their schools. To that end, they’ll stage a rally on Monday evening at 6:30 at A.E. Bowers Elementary School.
Rocky View Trustee Sylvia Eggerer tells The Calgary Herald Airdrie was already in crisis mode before the start of the school year. Now the problem is worse. 387 new students have reported to the city’s eleven schools this fall. That pushes the total school population to over 17,000.
At George McDougall High School there are 400 more students this year than the provincially mandated capacity.
Some schools have been forced to find room in hallways or use the library.
The province opened 18 new schools this year and has plans for another 14 in 2012. But none are slated for Airdrie.
