Anti-racism activists are the victims of Calgary’s latest violent home invasion.
Jason Devine believes his duplex was targeted by white supremacists, who firebombed his home two years ago.
His wife, Bonnie Devine made an unsuccessful run for the mayor’s chair last month.
Police were called to the home invasion on 8th Avenue SE, just after 1:00 a.m. Monday.
The crooks beat Jason and his friend, who remains in hospital with a broken arm.
Bonnie Devine was in a bedroom at the time of the attack and called 911.
Jason Devine tells 660News their four kids were also home, but were luckily asleep and not hurt.
“They’re cowards, they come in the night, they don’t care about the children,” he says. “They don’t care how it affects them.”
Police believe the possibility that someone was trying to kill Jason Devine is remote, but officers are not ruling it out.
Based on the victim’s anti-racist activism, Acting Staff Sergeant Brad Moore says police are looking at this as a targeted attack.
He says officers are helping the family as much as they can with security advice.
“You can’t tell people what to do or what not to do,” he says. “If you believe that strongly in your cause, I’m not going to be able to tell him ‘don’t do it.'”
As for who may be responsible, police say they’re looking at several possible leads.
