Airdrie student petitions for more schools

A grade 8 student from Airdrie is leading the charge with a petition to get the Stelmach government to provide funding for desperately needed schools in the city.

13 year old Leah Moore has accumulated three-thousand signatures so far with a goal of four-thousand.

Parents, teachers and officials met on Monday night to rally the Alberta government to take action.

Airdrie’s mayor tells CTV, no new schools have been built since 2003 and the population has doubled since then.

There are only 10 public schools in Airdrie for seven-thousand students and one of the high schools is currently 30 per cent over capacity.

The 13 year old will be heading to the legislature with petition in hand next week.
