A Calgary woman says she’s out over $4,500 after being sucked into a secret shopper scam.
In the ruse, the person who is supposed to be the secret shopper gets a cheque from the suspect. They are then asked to buy things with the cash and send any extra money back to the sender. Later the victim is told by their bank that the cheque is fraudulent, and they are responsible for any money drawn from it including the money they returned to the con artist.
The Calgary Police Service says they have yet to hear of anyone in the city that has been victimized, adding it is trying to be pro-active by publicizing the scam.
But a woman tells 660News she filed a report three weeks ago, after losing thousands of dollars in the scheme.
She advises that people should be wary of any online job offers or opportunities that seem too good to be true.
She calls the experience horrifying and frustrating.
