AHS lowers standards

Alberta Health Services has once again lowered the standards by which it measures success with patient wait times.

This, as it struggles with overcrowding in emergency rooms and it also comes in the wake of a report out Friday showing that wait times are worsening.

The Calgary Herald reports AHS is now aiming to admit seriously ill patients within 8 hours of their arrival 45 per cent of the time.

That’s down from the previous target of 48 per cent.

NDP Leader Brian Mason tells the Herald, “If they keep lowering the target, i guess they’ll eventually meet them.”

Wildrose Alliance health critic Heather Forsyth says, “Health officials can set all the targets they want but the simple fact is that we don’t have enough acute care beds.”

The Stelmach government has promised up to 2 thousand new beds by 2013.
