Okotoks needs more water to fuel growth

Okotoks is asking the province for permission to draw more water from Sheep River.

The town says it can take just 2,000 more residents before it runs out of new sources of water to feed its growth.

Okotoks council argues its application should be granted because the town returns 80 per cent of all the water it takes from Sheep River.

But environmental groups are concerned about more treated sewer water going into the river.

Joe Obad of Water Matters tells The Calgary Herald if Okotoks gets its way, water quality in the area will suffer.
