Sherman suspended from Tory caucus

Tory MLA and Parliamentary Assistant for Health, Dr. Raj Sherman, has been suspended from caucus.

He made headlines last week when he criticized the premier and Alberta Health Services for the handling of healthcare and the emergency room wait time issue.

Monday, the party announced the Edmonton MLA and emergency room physician will now sit as an independent.

Government Whip Robin Campbell says Sherman was booted indefinitely for breaching caucus discipline.

“There’s some decision’s that Raj made that he couldn’t decide to change his mind on and we decided to suspend him.  Raj was not suspended for standing up for Albertans, like all our MLA’s do, this was not an advocacy issue that Raj was suspended for this was an issue of caucus discipline and because of that this decision was made.”

A plan announced Friday was overshadowed by Alberta Health Services CEO Stephen Duckett’s refusal to answer reporter questions because he was eating a cookie.
