Police step up holiday Check Stops

With holiday office parties starting to pop up around Calgary, it increases the risk of drunk drivers on the road during the afternoon rush.

City police are gearing up for another enhanced Check Stop campaign that will see road side breathalyzers set up starting at noon.

Constable Jim Lebedeff says more than 33-hundred impaired charges were laid last year and, while he acknowledges those daytime Check Stops can cause traffic jams, he says at least Calgarians will get the message.

“If you’re sitting at the bar and you’re having that last drink and you think maybe you’re okay to drive, well now you know there are not only Check Stops during the night time but also during the day time.   So, hopefully it’s going to make you have that second thought,” says Lebedeff.

The daytime Check Stops run from noon until 8 p.m. starting Wednesday, December 1st, and run all month.
