Transit funding dominated day one of 2011 budget talks at Calgary City Hall.
Alderman Gord Lowe proposed adding 166,000 man hours to Calgary Transit services next year. He says the money to cover the added costs could come from revenue collected by Calgary police through “speed on green” cameras.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi says if alderman do not approve Lowe’s proposal, they still would have had to find money, somewhere, for transit.
Administration recommended trimming $300,000 from the transit plan.
In the end, council voted to extend the man hours under Lowe’s proposal, and nixed a plan to cut funding to a program that helps disabled Calgarians use transit.
