Calgary MLA introducing anti-idling bill for drivers

Independent MLA Dave Taylor will introduce a private member’s bill in the Legislature today with the goal of cutting down on people letting their vehicles endelessly idle.

“Canadian motorists idle their vehicles in the winter-time, in a typical winter, for a combined total of 75 million minutes a day,” Taylor tells 660News.  “If you put all the fuel that we waste doing that into one vehicle, you could idle that vehicle for 144 years.”

But Taylor says there are exceptions to his proposed rule.

“Emergency vehicles obviously,” Taylor cites as one example.  “Public transit vehicles as well.  And there’s a temperature exemption.  When the temperature goes below -23 we wouldn’t hold them to that.”

Last week an anti-idling bill was introduced in the Nova Scotia legislature, which would make it the first province to adapt such a measure.  Up to this point, only municipalities have had such bylaws.  Montreal introduced such legislation 40 years ago.
