911 hang-ups bogging down system

The city is launching a public education program to let Calgarians know just how seriously 911 hang-ups are affecting the system.

There can be up to 4-thousand of them per month and most of the misdials come from cellphones.

According to a new report, cells account for 90% of accidental calls.

Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart tells the Calgary Sun every time there’s a hang-up it has to be investigated and she says that affects the wait times for the bonafide calls.

The call centre will start its new public awareness campaign early next year.
