Police want bars open longer

It doesn’t sound like a plan the police would endorse, but they’re hoping keeping the bars open past three a.m. could actually cut down on social disorder.

For police, 17th Ave becomes a nightmare when the bars close, forcing rowdy, intoxicated people into the streets.

Staff Sgt. Quinn Jacques tells 660News if the bars stay open later, it would solve a number of problems.

“It would allow a broader time for patrons to exit a bar, reduce noise and social disorder and as well as the petty crimes”.

Jacques says the taps would still  shut off at two a.m. to allow people to sober up before going home, and that in turn would be less of a strain on police officers trying to keep the peace.

He says they plan to talk to bar owners about the idea before trying to get the province on board.
