Stranded motorists in Ontario rescued

Military helicopters, snowmobiles and busses had to be used to rescue some 300 people stranded on a southern Ontario highway overnight.

They were driving on highway 402 near Sarnia when a sudden storm descended on the area, plastering vehicles with chunks of snow, causing whiteout conditions and forcing  drivers to stop and park on the road.

Some people had been stranded for as long as 24 hours.

Ontario’s Community Safety Minister says all vehicles have been checked and double checked and at this time, it appears everyone is safe.

He says about 17 people were rescued by military helicopter, but most were transported to safety by police and volunteers in land vehicles.
