Violence erupts at Radisson Heights Community Centre

Police are piecing together what happened at a Southeast Calgary community centre, after violence erupted early Saturday morning.

Officers rushed to the Radisson Heights Community Centre after calls reporting a large brawl.

Police say someone had let off bear spray inside the centre so they found about 30 to 50 people outside the hall when they arrived on scene.

Despite the large crowd, officials say witnesses aren’t cooperating with their investigation.

Insp. James Hardy tells 660News some people did report shots were fired during the fight, but they weren’t able to find any evidence indicating that’s true.

A person who witnessed the violent outbreak at the centre describes the scene as chaotic.

Cory Mallard says two men fighting fueled the violence.

“Everybody was just getting ready to leave. Three or four guys were going out the door, one guy grabbed another guy and then one guy not involved just pretty much opened up bear spray on everybody….I got some in my eyes when I went out the side door and then soon as I hit the side door, I guess somebody was shooting up in the air.”

He says he grabbed his girlfriend and they locked themselves in the basement where they called police.

Some of the people on scene did have minor scrapes and bruises when police arrived, but no one was transported to hospital.

Mallard says he’s been to the community hall dozens of times, but he’s never seen any violence there.

No arrests have been made and police hope anyone with information will contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
