Environmental groups upset over water amendment

Environmental groups are taking Alberta Environment to court over changes to how water is taken from the Bow River.
They’re upset after the government’s recent decision to amend the eastern irrigation district water license for the river, essentially allowing new projects to take water from the waterway.
Ecojustice lawyer Barry Robinson tells 660News they were surprised with the recent move. Until now, users in the Bow River basin had to have a license to use water, and new users had to transfer that authority.
Robinson says this amendment will change that, calling it a creative attempt to get around the transfer provision.
The group has filed an appeal on behalf of three environmental groups. He’s expected a hearing in three to five months.
