Fire guts house days before Christmas

A Calgary couple has been forced from their home just days before Christmas after a fire in their Killarney home.

The blaze killed their cat.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of 31st Street SW.

Qyn Bayley-Hay woke up to the sound of his smoke alarm and then opened his door to a blast of smoke.

He managed to call 911, grab a sweater and get out, which he tells 660News, he realized is the most important thing.

“It’s Christmas, you have a lot more stuff in there than you usually do but it’s just stuff.   I’m okay, there’s no real problems, I’m not sick, everything’s okay,” says Bailey-Hay.

He and Melissa Erickson have insurance and will be staying with family over Christmas.

No word yet on what caused the fire.
