Calgary police have some last minute holiday home security tips for you.
After opening your presents, don’t leave anything in your garbage or recycling that would indicate you have new items in your home (e.g. empty TV, iPod, computer boxes). Drop them off at your community recycling centre or keep them in your house until recycling pick-up day.
Keep your valuables out of sight. Most break-and-enter culprits are opportunists and they will typically steal items they find in plain view. Also, items that are easily carried and concealed in a backpack are often targeted. Electronics, jewelry, and cash are the most common items stolen.
Take photos and create a list of all of your valuable possessions; include details such as make, brand, model, colour, value, description, quantity, special markings, and the serial numbers. Use an engraver, where possible, to put identifying marks on your property.
Install a home security system that will produce a loud audible alarm and one that will contact a security company when someone is breaking into your house.
If you’re headed out of town for the holidays, it’s also important to secure your home before you leave.
Make your home look lived in. Put lights, radios and televisions on variable timers. If possible, have someone stay at your home.
Have a trusted neighbour or friend check your house daily, collect your mail and shovel your walks.
If you’re leaving a vehicle outside your house, have someone move it periodically to make it seem as though it’s being used.
Lock up tools, BBQs and any other valuables outside your home.
Turn off telephone ringer so no one knows your home is empty; don’t leave outgoing voicemail, social media or e-mail messages that indicate you’re away.
