The Boxing Day Bonanza

Some bargain hunters were waiting in the dark, Sunday morning, ready to pounce on Boxing Day specials at retail outlets.
“There are sales on TV’s and everything,” one woman tells 660News’ Alison Sandor outside a northeast electronics store where flat screen televisions were being carted out to waiting vehicles.
“They’re really good,” says another woman of the specials. “The stores actually have what’s in the flyers. They have lots of them.”
But another shopper reported that most of the really good specials had already been depleted.
At Market Mall in the northwest, mall spokesperson Jill McDonald admits online shopping is becoming increasingly popular, but notes that shoppers don’t get the same customer service with purchases over the internet nor do they have to wait for their items to arrive by mail or courier service.
“We see around 85,000, which is a big day,” McDonald tells 660News, referring to previous Boxing Day crowd figures. “It’s definitely worth the effort of coming, lining up, fighting the crowds for sure.”
Bruce Cran of the Canadian Consumers Association wonders how much cash shoppers will have left in their pockets.
“Don’t forget, we’ve already had Black Friday, which has previously been a south of the border, American-style sale,” Cran tells 660News. “That also came into Canada and played very heavily in the marketplace, this year. Whether that’s going to make a difference to the Boxing Day sales, I don’t know.”
He has one other tip for shoppers: credit cards often offer extended warranties on those items you buy, as well as added consumer protection.
