Home invasions spike in Calgary

Calgary’s police chief says their crackdown on gangs is one reason for an increase in the number of home invasion robberies.

Chief Rick Hanson tells the Calgary Sun, their success in targeting organized crooks on the streets has driven the criminals indoors.

Hanson says a lot of criminals don’t like having the focus on them and they resort to home invasions because it’s safer to even the score that way than to do it publicly.

Calgary has seen more than 70 home invasions this year.

Five years ago, the city had less than a third of that in an entire year.
