Petition goes around for merged school board

Hundreds of people are supporting a call to vote on whether Alberta should have just one school system.

Former education minister David King put forth a petition to have a referendum on whether the province’s public and Catholic schools should be merged.

About 650 people have now signed it.

King says it would be a good way to preserve community schools amidst provincial funding shortages.

The president of the Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association tells The Calgary Herald she’s not concerned about the petition.

She says the majority of Albertans she talks to like having the choice between the two types of schools.
