State of emergency in Strathmore

The town of Strathmore, east of Calgary is keeping a local state of emergency in place after hundreds of motorists became stranded along area highways.

While RCMP are now able to get out and rescue those who are stranded, they still need a place to go.

Linda Nelson, the deputy director of the community’s Disaster Services tells 660News, people are taking advantage of the shelters that were opened Saturday night.

“We have about, I would say, 130 people and we are keeping them at the Westmount Elementary School and we have those who have animals, pets with them, we have them at the Lutheran Church,” says Nelson.

The state of emergency will be lifted when town officials believe the dangerous conditions have passed.

More information is available on the town’s website at www.strathmore.ca.
