Man shot in Canmore carrying replica gun

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is releasing more about an alleged serial robber shot dead by Canmore RCMP Monday afternoon.

ASIRT head Clifton Purvis says the 62-year-old man was a suspect in a number of armed robberies in the days leading up to his death.

The Sun is identifying him as Steven Boucher, who was a Canmore resident.

Investigators with the ASIRT, now investigating the shooting, say numerous people witnessed the late afternoon incident, including an off-duty RCMP member.

Purvis says the weapon the two officers saw before shooting the suspect was a replica.

“The weapon the deceased used is a replica of a Smith & Wesson firearm.   It is not a functioning firearm,” says Purvis.

Several shots were fired by RCMP including two that hit the suspect in the chest.

The man was pronounced dead in hospital.

ASIRT investigates all instances of injury or death involving police.
