New book aims to reveal Alberta’s true colours

Geo Takach, who is a PhD candidate in Communications Studies is launching his new book “Will the Real Alberta Please Stand Up?” Thursday in Kensington.

Takach tells 660News he spoke to people across the country, many of whom told him they harbour bad stereotypes of Alberta.

“We are back-water, culturally. We’re a bunch of red necks. We’re out to destroy the Earth. We eat tons of beef. My thought is that, while there’s truth to some of these stereotypes, they’re just the tip of the grain elevator. The real Alberta is a lot more nuances and sophisticated,” he says.”

He says in his book, he also speaks with some prominent Albertans, to show what the province is really like.

“Poets, politicians, paleontologists, everyone from Doris Daley, a world champion cowboy poet to Ralph Klein to scientists, to artists of various disciplines to get their take on what is the essence of our province.”

Takach says he hopes his book will spark a dialogue amongst Canadians, and it will help people see Alberta for what it really is.

“What I’m hoping is that people will continue the conversation of who are we, really and where do we want to go with the enormous opportunities and the even greater responsibilities that have been gifted to us.”

Thursday’s book launch, at “Pages books” on Kensington Road will include a Vaudeville-style revue, a comedy and short film.

It begins at 7:30.
