Some schools cancel awards ceremonies

The collective over the individual is becoming the trend at schools across the country, including one in Alberta that recently did away with individual awards ceremonies.
Instead, as The National Post reports, school officials want to reward cooperation, not competition.
An overwhelming number of Calgarians 660News spoke with on city streets Thursday morning say the awards should stay in place.
Patricia says collaboration is admirable, but children need something to strive for.
“There absolutely has to be competition, that’s reality in the world,” she says. “I really think that the system has been dumbed down if they’re going to continue to reward mediocrity or not reward excellence.”
Rob says it’s just the way the world is and schools should leave it alone.
“They need competition, it’s the bottom line,” he says. “It’s a competitive world.”
