Survey says: Albertans less physical than before

A new survey on physical fitness in Alberta has revealed that people in our province are less active than they were just a year ago.

The 2011 Alberta survey on physical activity shows that only 54 per cent of Albertans are physically active enough to receive health benefits.

That’s down from 58.5 per cent in 2009.

Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, Dr Tanya Berry tells 660News, there are many benefits to keeping active.

“You’re going to have reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some types of cancers, it also extends to mental health benefits, reduced anxiety and depression.”

She says, simply walking for half an hour a day can have a huge impact on most people.

The survey also shows that 75 per cent of those asked said they would use a provincial adult fitness tax credit if one was available.
