Two Dead in Avalanche in Kananaskis

Two men have been killed by an avalanche in the Burstall Pass area of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.

RCMP say the two, in their mid 40’s, were buried by the snow around 3:45 Saturday afternoon.

Spokesperson Doris Stapleton says the two were friends who were back country skiing.

Three people saw the avalanche and called the authorities.

Rescuers were able to find one of the bodies Saturday but couldn’t recover it because of poor weather conditions.

They were not able to find the second man until Sunday morning, when both bodies were recovered.

The avalanche started at the 2,400m level, about seven kilometres into the back country from Highway 742.

RCMP say the avalanche was a Size three, classified as being around 1,000m long and having the force to break trees, bury cars and destroy small buildings.

The names of the victims aren’t being released until their families have been notified.
