Alleged war criminal arrested in Lethbridge

A man accused of being part of a massacre in Guatemala that saw 251 men, women and children murdered has been arrested in Lethbridge.

Police say 52-year-old Jorge Vinicio Orantes Sosa is being brought to Calgary to face extradition to the United States, over allegations of faking citizenship documents.

Staff Sergeant Wes Houston of Lethbridge Regional Police tells 660News officers don’t think Sosa was in Lethbridge for long.

“We believe he was here visiting,” he says. “I would estimate he was probably not in Lethbridge much more than 36 to 48 hours.”

Police are refusing to comment on who exactly Sosa was visiting in Lethbridge.

Sosa is also wanted by Guatemalan authorities for his role in the 28-year-old massacre and could eventually be deported there if he is first extradited to the US.
