A judge has ruled a veteran Calgary police officer was acting in self defence when he hit a woman in the forehead with the heel of his hand.
The 47-year-old has been acquitted on an assault charge.
It was in January, 2009 that Constable Blaine Ellerby was filling up his cruiser when a cabbie pulled up and tried to get the man and woman in his vehicle out.
Ellerby ordered them to leave and the woman started throwing things and knocked him to the ground. That’s when the officer put up his hand to defend himself.
The woman did not testify at the hearing.
