Report says move now on climate change

A big excuse that the federal government has used when it comes to implementing stricter climate change policies has been shot down.

The National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy says Canada should stop waiting for the U.S. direction.

The report says Ottawa needs to put a price on carbon now and worry about harmonizing its program with America later.

When it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, she says a made-in-Canada solution is a good start.

Clare Demerse with the Pembina Institute says Ottawa is being urged to act immediately, because we’re going to be a bigger polluter than the U.S. in the coming years.

“Canada’s emissions are projected to grow faster under business as usual, than the American emissions.   A big part of the reason for that is the oil sands,” says Demerse.

Demerse says the National Roundtable report is telling Ottawa to steer clear of U.S. climate change paralysis.

She says taking action would actually help — not hurt our economy.
